WHO WE ARE
c
Joe Carney

When local Main Liner Joe Carney drove by the closed former "John Harvard's" brewpub/restaurant building on Lancaster Avenue in early 2008, he instantly knew he was looking at a "Trophy" location.   A restaurant for many, many years   -   going back to the days of the "Old Covered Wagon Inn"   -   Joe saw potential for the site that went far beyond its previous incarnations . . . and, he was looking for an opportunity to expand his business beyond his legendary "Carney's Cape May" restaurant.   With over 35 years experience in the "biz" (including a long run on City Line Avenue in Bala Cynwyd, with "Carney's City Line"), Joe's introduction to the hospitality industry started at the tender age of 5, when he worked after school at his parents' restaurant.   As many have said about success in the restaurant business   -   "you've got to have it in your blood" . . . and in Joe's case, it is true.

Joe quickly called his friend and golfing partner   -   Steve Finley (Finley Catering)   -   about the real estate offering, and once the two of them got their heads together on what they both saw as a great opportunity, it was "all systems go".   The results of their creative efforts speak for themselves   -   witness, "The Paddock at Devon!"

Having grown up on the Main Line, Joe Carney, and his wife of 23 years, Truda, are currently residents of St. Davids, and have 5 sons.   With their boys attending Saint Katherine's of Sienna, Radnor High School, and Malvern Prep - they are well engrained in the Main Line community . . . which was a strong part of Joe's impetus and motivation to develop a landmark restaurant which would serve his "hometown" neighborhood, as well as the greater Main Line and western suburbs community.

Stephen Finley

Stephen Finley, Founder & President of Finley Catering Company, knew as a young man that he had an interest in preparing and presenting good “home cooking.” His curiosity grew while observing his mother prepare his family’s favorite recipes. With their encouragement, guidance, and even criticism, he began his journey into the catering business.

Small neighborhood parties led to hosting several community events, and gradually Steve’s reputation for excellence led to hosting wedding receptions.

This entrepreneur realized great success at a very young age. His first “exclusive” catering appointment came many years ago from the Clothier Room located on the Main Line in Wynnewood, PA. Since then, Steve has added the magnificent Ballroom at the Ben and the breathtaking Crystal Tea Room to his portfolio.

In 1997, Steve had the honor of hosting the Presidential Summit Luncheon at this center city location, the Ballroom at the Ben. This prestigious event was attended by then President and Mrs. Clinton, Vice President and Mrs. Gore, the Honorable George and Mrs. Bush, the Honorable Gerald Ford, Colin Powell, along with Governors from across the country and numerous celebrities.

Finley’s accomplishments, small or large, have earned him a reputation that results in bookings at the Ballroom at the Ben and Crystal Tea Room exceeding all expectations.

Steve’s business has grown considerably over the years. However, his values have stayed the same. He continues to strive for perfection in all aspects of his profession. Steve credits his success, in part, to hard work, dedication to detail, exquisite cuisine and top-notch employees.

Steve looks forward to the continued success of his joint venture with Joe Carney of Carney’s in Cape May, NJ —“The Paddock at Devon” in Wayne, PA. Occupying the former John Harvard’s at 629 West Lancaster Avenue, the Paddock offers incredible fare in an elegant, comfortable atmosphere suited for families and friends alike, with various weekly events and specials that are sure to satisfy!
